Hidden World - A Microscopic view of a drop of pond water
Project type
Art Quilt
Date
2022
Size
26" x 19"
A fabric wall hanging created from raw edged fussy cut pieces of purchased Australian Aboriginal dot drawings printed fabrics appliqued onto an interesting background fabric, then free motion quilted with batting and backing fabric layers. Couched yarn, ribbon and beading were added for further interest and texture.
I have always been fascinated with the unseen details that can be revealed under a microscope. There is a whole other world under the lens of which few are aware. An alien landscape filled with both the beautiful and the grotesque, although which is which depends on the viewer, I suppose.
While I can't remember exactly when I first saw what could live in a water droplet, I do still remember the excitement of first viewing this hidden universe, wanting to be a tiny inclusion amidst the teeming, swirling shapes as they danced in the spotlight. Although I didn't realize it at the time, this peek at life under the lens was a major influence on my future educational and career paths.
